Election Season Begins in Earnest August 2 in Commerce City

Nomination petitions available on Aug. 2; Candidate info session is Aug. 6

COMMERCE CITY – Want to help build a Quality Community for a Lifetime? Consider running for one of Commerce City’s five elected positions this November. Commerce City voters will elect a Mayor, a council member for Ward II and Ward IV, as well as two individuals to represent the city at-large during the city’s coordinated election Nov. 1.

Commerce City will host a candidate information session on Saturday, Aug. 6. from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Civic Center. While not mandatory, the meeting will provide potential candidates with details on campaign rules and regulations. Information about the city’s structure, budget and department-specific activities also will be provided, so all candidates have accurate information about current city projects and upcoming challenges. Light refreshments will be served.

Residents interested in elected office must meet the following requirements:

· Citizen of the United States.

· 18 years of age or older.

· City resident for at least 12 months preceding appointment.

· Resident of ward (not applicable for at-large seats) for 25 days immediately preceding appointment.

· Cannot be serving a felony conviction (including probation or parole).

To become a candidate, residents must file a notarized candidate affidavit with the city clerk within 10 days of publicly announcing their intent. Candidates also must submit completed nomination petitions, signed by at least 25 registered electors within the ward or city (depending on position) to the city clerk by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22. Nomination petitions will be available at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
