Brighton Council approves increases to utility rates

The Brighton City Council last night approved rate increases for water and sewer services as recommended by city staff. The new rates, which go into effect with utility bills issued after Aug. 1, include an increase to both fixed rates and user rates for water and sewer as well as the addition of a storm drainage fee.

For fixed rates, residential consumers will now pay $7.86 per month for water, up a $1.50, and $5.40 per month for sewer, up $3.25. The fixed storm drainage fee will be $1.75 per month.

For user rates, residential consumers will now pay $3.93 per 1,000 gallons of water up to 25,000 gallons of water used, up 15 cents per 1,000 gallons, and $3.92 per 1,000 gallons of sewer, also up 15 cents per 1,000 gallons.

Commercial users will also see an increase to their water and sewer fixed rates and user rates based on the size of their meter. The fixed storm drainage fee for commercial consumers will be $5 per month.

“The adjustment to utility rates will allow the city to maintain and upgrade our existing water and sewer infrastructure so we can continue to meet the needs of our current customers well into the future,” said Jim Landeck, Director of Utilities for the City of Brighton. “Periodic small increases such as these allow us to avoid more painful, higher rate increases in the future, while allowing us to ensure the safety and dependability of our systems for our residents.”
