November 2010 as National Adoption Month in Adams County

The Adams County Board of Commissioners proclaimed November 2010 as National Adoption Month in Adams County. Each month, an average of 27 abused and neglected children in the care of Adams County Human Services await a loving, nurturing and permanent home. These children are not the newborns most people picture when they think of adoption. Generally, they are older children and teenagers who may have unique medical, psychological or physical needs. These children need extra patience and support to help them overcome previous hardships.

Families that are willing and able to adopt children who have special needs require and deserve community and public agency support. A disability, low income or unmarried status does not preclude the right to adopt.

As a result of the partnership between Adams County and the 17th Judicial District, Adams County anticipates finalizing 140 adoptions in 2010. The local courts of Adams County will open their doors on National Adoption Day, Saturday, November 20, to finalize the adoptions of local children and join other organizations to celebrate all adoptions.

Adams County Quilters donated a quilt themed “bloom where you are planted” which represents these children being adopted by families that will allow them to learn and grow. For the past several years, the Adams County Quilters have made a quilt for each child to hang as a memory of his/her and the family’s special day.
