Gov. Bill Ritter announced today that Peter Weir will leave his post tomorrow as Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety and will be replaced by Deputy Executive Director Kathy Sasak.
Starting September 1, Weir will become Senior Chief Deputy District Attorney for Felony Prosecutions in the First Judicial District, which covers Jefferson and Gilpin counties. Weir has served as head of the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS) since 2007. Prior to that, he served as a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District.
Sasak (pronounced say-sak) became Deputy Executive Director of CDPS in July 2007. Prior to that, she was Assistant Director of the Prosecution and Code Enforcement (PACE) Unit in the Denver City Attorney’s Office and also served for many years as a prosecutor in the First Judicial District.
“On behalf of the people of Colorado, I want to thank Peter Weir for his distinguished service to our state and his tireless commitment to protecting our citizens and improving our criminal justice system,” Gov. Ritter said. “I have known Peter Weir for many years and have only the deepest respect for his integrity and selfless dedication to public service.”
“It is a great honor to be appointed by Gov. Ritter to this position,” Sasak said. “Having already become familiar with the work of the 1,300 members of the Department of Public Safety for the past several years, I regard it as a distinct privilege to continue working with a wonderful group of the state’s best public safety professionals.”
CDPS is one of the state’s executive branch departments, which oversees the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Division of Criminal Justice, the Division of Fire Safety, and the Office of Preparedness and Security.
Sasak served as Deputy District Attorney for the First Judicial District between 1984 and 1993, and as Assistant District Attorney for that district between 1993-2005. She began her legal professional career as law clerk for the Hon. Gaspar Perricone, a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District, from 1983 to 1984. She earned a bachelor degree from Mount Union College in Ohio and a law degree from the University of Colorado.
